Blue & Off-white Checkerboard Mug | Fern Taylor

A blue and off-white checkerboard mug, built square by square into the clay, so it shows on the inside of the mug as well as the outside.

Fern Taylor handbuilds each piece in her South London studio using nerikomi, a Japanese technique where coloured clays are layered, sliced and pieced together by hand before being shaped. The pattern runs all the way through the clay, inside and out, not painted on, not a glaze. It takes real patience to get right, and because each piece is built from hand-layered clay, the checks shift slightly from one to the next. That's part of what makes nerikomi special.
