A warm yellow and brown check, built square by square into the clay, so it shows on the inside of the mug as well as the outside.

Fern Taylor handbuilds each piece in her South London studio. Rather than painting a pattern on, she builds it from coloured clays using the Japanese technique of nerikomi, so no two pieces come out quite the same.

In nerikomi, coloured clays are layered, sliced and pieced together by hand, then shaped into each piece, so the pattern is part of the clay itself rather than painted on. It means the design runs all the way through, inside and out, and takes real patience and skill to get right.
