Grain Dish | Fern Taylor

A small dish with soft lines running through the clay like wood grain, for rings by the sink, salt on the table or a couple of biscuits.

Fern Taylor handbuilds each piece in her South London studio. Rather than painting a pattern on, she builds it from coloured clays using the Japanese technique of nerikomi, so no two pieces come out quite the same.

In nerikomi, coloured clays are layered, sliced and pieced together by hand, then shaped into each piece, so the pattern is part of the clay itself rather than painted on. It means the design runs all the way through, inside and out, and takes real patience and skill to get right.
