Low Grain Mug | Fern Taylor

A low, wide mug with soft lines running through the clay like wood grain, good for a flat white or a slow pot of tea.

Fern Taylor handbuilds each piece in her South London studio. Rather than painting a pattern on, she builds it from coloured clays using the Japanese technique of nerikomi, so no two pieces come out quite the same.

In nerikomi, coloured clays are layered, sliced and pieced together by hand, then shaped into each piece, so the pattern is part of the clay itself rather than painted on. It means the design runs all the way through, inside and out, and takes real patience and skill to get right.
