Brown & Off-white Marble Beaker | Fern Taylor

A handleless beaker in brown and off-white clays folded into a soft marbled check, for water by the bed, juice at breakfast or a short coffee.

Fern Taylor handbuilds each piece in her South London studio. Rather than painting a pattern on, she builds it from coloured clays using the Japanese technique of nerikomi, so no two pieces come out quite the same.

In nerikomi, coloured clays are layered, sliced and pieced together by hand, then shaped into each piece, so the pattern is part of the clay itself rather than painted on. It means the design runs all the way through, inside and out, and takes real patience and skill to get right.
