Originally made for pharmaceutical and laboratory use, these heavy stoneware mortars were designed to withstand repeated grinding and were acid-resistant — built to a standard far beyond anything made for the domestic kitchen. That robustness is exactly what makes them so enduring, and so satisfying to use today.
