Garlands are one of my favourite ways to decorate — simple, adaptable, a guaranteed way to make a space feel that bit more inviting. Though we often think of them as Christmas decorations, they bring a lovely sense of celebration to so many moments throughout the year.
In our house, garlands have become an integral part of our birthday traditions. The night before, myself and one of my daughters (whoever’s birthday it isn’t the next day) hang a selection above the kitchen table, ready for the special breakfast that always marks the morning. It’s such an easy way to make the day feel a little more special — a quiet nod to celebration that fits within the reality of busy work, school and life.

At Christmas, I like to play around with different combinations each year. Garlands can be draped around doorways, wound through the tree, swagged across a shelf, or laid throughout a beautifully dressed table. Small changes — pairing them with foliage, fairy lights, or a few handmade decorations — can completely change the look.
Many of our garland collection are handmade and Fairtrade, crafted from paper/ natural materials, so they can be used again and again. They move easily from one celebration to the next — Christmas, birthdays, New Year’s Eve, even a simple Sunday brunch. The stars, especially, catch the light beautifully and feel perfect for marking the turn of the year.

Over time, these small details become part of your home’s rhythm — familiar pieces that reappear whenever there’s something to celebrate, quietly carrying memories with them. We’ve gathered quite the collection in our own home over the years, though a mouse recently found the birthday box stashed in the shed, and we lost a few old favourites that had been in rotation since my girls were little. Learn from my mistake and store yours in a lidded box somewhere safe! I’m taking it as an excuse to add a few new pieces from our latest arrivals.
