The Art of Hibernation

The clocks have slipped back, the light fades a little earlier, and the season invites us to slow down. It’s the perfect time to settle into the softer pace of life with cosy home essetials - a pot of tea brewing, your favourite mug waiting, a good book close to hand, the gentle flicker of beeswax candles bringing warmth to the darker evenings.

Around the house, pools of glowing lamp light help to brighten dark corners, cosy socks and blankets add their quiet comfort, and the familiar ritual of lighting a candle marks the shift from day to night. These small, everyday moments of care bring atmosphere and are what make autumn’s darkness feel indulgent rather than dreary — an excuse to hibernate beautifully.

Hibernation doesn’t have to mean hiding away; it’s about finding beauty in the rhythm of home life. Whilst the rush of the outside world doesn't just go away and in many ways it only increases at this time of year, it's important to create small moments to connect with yourself. A slow breakfast, reading by the window, or laying the table with pieces you love — these are the details that turn ordinary days into beautiful everyday living. Investing in well-made, sustainable items not only supports independent makers but also creates a home that feels unique to you, lived-in, with a story to tell.

Tools for Hibernation

When it comes to hibernating well, a few thoughtful essentials make all the difference. Start with cosy socks — wool is always the goal, and while 100% wool is the ultimate luxury, a good blend often offers more wear and fewer evenings spent darning. Our Classic Socks, made from 24% cashmere and 27% superfine wool, strike that perfect balance of softness and longevity.

Speaking of wool, we take the subject of cosy seriously around here, and a good, thick, high-quality wool blanket is top of our hibernation kit list. The Brita Sweden collection, woven from soft, breathable New Zealand wool, has been a customer favourite — the quality is exceptional and the patterns timeless. We also have beautiful pieces from Fine Little Day and Klippan — because if anyone knows how to make the most of the darker months, it’s the Swedes.

Then there are beeswax candles, handmade in Cumbria by a small family business using pure UK wax. Each delivery arrives with a handwritten note from Ted, sharing snippets from their workshop — a touch of weather chat, news of the bees, or even a reflection on the week’s political climate. It’s the kind of human connection that makes every candle feel special.

A ceramic teapot is another must — whether for one or to share, it’s a gentle reminder to slow down and turn a simple moment into a small ritual. Pair that with a good book for the perfect escape. Nordic Winter, one of our bestsellers, gathers together beautiful winter recipes and photography that feels like therapy in book form. Or, for something more practical and grounding, The Art of Knitwear Repair offers a mindful evening of mending — hot chocolate in one hand, a needle in the other.

It doesn’t take much, just warmth, softness and a few small comforts, to make the darker months feel more welcoming. Here’s to embracing hibernation, being kind to ourselves and seeking out those ways to make the ordinary a little more extraordinary.
